Even when a wildfire is hundreds of miles away, smoke can travel long distances and affect air quality in Bellevue, Seattle, Kirkland, Redmond, Bothell, and surrounding communities.
Closing the windows is an important first step, but it does not necessarily keep all wildfire smoke outside. Fine smoke particles can enter through doors, small air leaks, ventilation systems, and outdoor-air intakes.
Your HVAC system can play an important role in keeping indoor air cleaner—but only if it is set up and maintained correctly.
Why Wildfire Smoke Is a Concern for Indoor Air Quality
Wildfire smoke contains a mixture of gases and extremely small particles. Of particular concern is PM2.5, particulate matter measuring 2.5 micrometers or smaller.
The Washington State Department of Ecology identifies wildfire smoke as the largest source of particle pollution in Washington and notes that smoke exposure can irritate the eyes, nose, and throat and worsen existing heart and lung conditions.
Because the particles are so small, simply going indoors does not completely eliminate exposure.
Smoke can enter a home through:
- Open windows and doors
- Gaps and air leaks around the building
- Fresh-air ventilation systems
- Outdoor-air HVAC intakes
- Window and portable air conditioners
- Exhaust systems that create negative pressure inside the home
Once smoke enters, particles can remain suspended in indoor air.

Can Your HVAC System Filter Wildfire Smoke?
Yes, a central forced-air HVAC system can help reduce airborne smoke particles, but the effectiveness depends heavily on the filter being used.
A basic furnace filter may primarily be designed to protect HVAC equipment from larger dust and debris rather than capture very small smoke particles.
During wildfire smoke events, the EPA recommends using a MERV 13 filter, or the highest-efficiency filter your HVAC system can safely accommodate. (US EPA)
MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. Generally, a higher MERV rating means the filter can capture smaller airborne particles more effectively.
However, homeowners should not automatically install the highest-MERV filter they can find.
Is MERV 13 Right for Every HVAC System?
Not necessarily.
Higher-efficiency filters can create more resistance to airflow than some standard filters. If a filter is too restrictive for the HVAC system—or becomes heavily loaded with smoke particles—the blower must work harder to move air through it.
The EPA notes that increased pressure drop across a heavily loaded filter can reduce airflow and place additional strain on HVAC equipment.
That is why filter compatibility matters.
An HVAC technician can evaluate:
- Filter dimensions
- Filter thickness
- Blower capacity
- Existing airflow
- Duct configuration
- Static pressure
- The highest practical MERV rating for the system
For many homes, MERV 13 can provide an effective balance between filtration and airflow, but the HVAC system needs to be capable of handling it.
Change Your HVAC Filter More Often During Wildfire Smoke
During normal conditions, homeowners may follow a relatively predictable filter-replacement schedule.
Wildfire season can change that.
A filter that normally lasts several months may become dirty much faster when the outdoor air contains elevated levels of smoke and fine particles.
EPA guidance recommends checking HVAC and portable-air-cleaner filters frequently during heavy smoke and replacing them when they become visibly dirty or develop a noticeable smoke odor. Filters may need replacement sooner than the manufacturer’s normal schedule.
Signs your HVAC filter may need changing include:
- A dark gray, brown, or black appearance
- Visible particle buildup
- A smoky odor
- Reduced airflow from vents
- Longer HVAC run times
- Increasing dust inside the home
Keeping several replacement filters available during Washington wildfire season can be useful, particularly when regional smoke is forecast.
Should You Set Your HVAC System to Recirculate?
During smoky conditions, you generally want to minimize the amount of polluted outdoor air entering your home.
If your central HVAC or ventilation system has a fresh-air intake, EPA guidance recommends closing the intake or switching the system to a recirculation setting during a wildfire smoke event.
Recirculation allows the system to repeatedly filter indoor air rather than continuously bringing smoky outdoor air into the house.

Should the HVAC Fan Be Set to “On” or “Auto”?
Under normal conditions, many homeowners leave the HVAC fan set to Auto, meaning the blower runs primarily when heating or cooling is operating.
During significant wildfire smoke, running the fan more frequently can provide additional filtration.
The EPA recommends running a central HVAC fan as often as possible when a compatible high-efficiency filter is installed. Setting the fan from Auto to On keeps indoor air circulating through the filter even when the air conditioner is not actively cooling.
There is an important tradeoff: continuous operation uses more electricity and causes filters to collect particles faster.
That makes frequent filter inspection particularly important.
Can Wildfire Smoke Affect the HVAC Equipment Itself?
Wildfire smoke primarily presents an indoor-air-quality challenge, but heavy particulate buildup can also affect HVAC operation.
As filters capture smoke particles, they gradually become more restrictive. A severely clogged filter can reduce airflow through the system, potentially contributing to:
- Longer operating cycles
- Reduced heating or cooling performance
- Increased blower workload
- Uneven temperatures
- Frozen evaporator coils during cooling season
- Higher energy consumption
Very heavy ash or debris near an outdoor heat pump or air-conditioning unit can also obstruct airflow around the condenser.
Homeowners should keep the area surrounding outdoor HVAC equipment reasonably clear. However, avoid opening or disassembling equipment yourself, particularly while ash is actively falling or local wildfire conditions remain unsafe.
If substantial ash has accumulated inside the outdoor unit, professional inspection and cleaning may be appropriate.
Portable HEPA Air Cleaners Can Provide Additional Protection
Central HVAC filtration is not the only option.
A portable air cleaner can provide concentrated filtration in rooms where household members spend the most time, such as bedrooms, living rooms, or home offices.
The EPA recommends selecting a portable air cleaner that is appropriately sized for the room and produces little or no ozone. A unit equipped with effective particle filtration, such as HEPA filtration, can help reduce fine airborne particles.
Pay attention to the unit’s Clean Air Delivery Rate, or CADR.
For wildfire smoke, EPA guidance recommends a tobacco-smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room’s square footage. For example, a 300-square-foot room would call for a CADR of approximately 200 or greater.
Portable air cleaners can supplement central HVAC filtration rather than replace it.
Be Careful With “Air Purifier” Marketing Claims
Not every device marketed as an air purifier works the same way.
For wildfire smoke, particle removal should be the priority.
The EPA specifically notes that technologies such as photocatalytic oxidation, hydroxyl generators, and certain devices using UV components are not recommended specifically for smoke-particle removal and may generate ozone or other pollutants.
A proven mechanical filtration system is generally more useful for removing wildfire particles than relying on vague claims about “purifying” or “sterilizing” indoor air.
Also remember that particle filters primarily address particulate matter. They should not be assumed to eliminate every gas, odor, or chemical compound found in wildfire smoke.
Consider Creating a Cleaner-Air Room
During prolonged periods of poor outdoor air quality, homeowners can designate one room as a cleaner-air space.
Choose a bedroom, family room, or other area where household members can comfortably spend significant time.
Keep windows and doors closed and use a properly sized portable air cleaner. If the home’s HVAC system is equipped with appropriate filtration, continue circulating filtered air through the home.
The EPA recommends minimizing indoor activities that generate additional particles during smoke events, including burning candles, smoking, frying or broiling food, using fireplaces, and vacuuming without HEPA filtration.
Don’t Forget to Check the Air Quality
Wildfire smoke conditions can change quickly as winds shift.
A clear morning does not necessarily mean air quality will remain good throughout the afternoon or evening.
Washington’s Department of Ecology continuously monitors air quality around the state and uses the EPA Air Quality Index:
- Green: Good
- Yellow: Moderate
- Orange: Unhealthy for sensitive groups
- Red: Unhealthy
- Purple: Very unhealthy
- Dark Red: Hazardous
